What's Happening?
Mnet's 'GIRLS PLANET 2' is set to premiere in 2027, marking a significant expansion in the global K-pop market. The show aims to discover a new girl group with a focus on North and Latin America. This initiative is part of CJ ENM's Music Creative eco-System,
which includes IP planning, platforms, and artist management. The program seeks applicants who are independent trainees, agency trainees, or currently debuted artists, born before January 1, 2013, and able to travel internationally. Applications open on May 1, 2026, via Mnet Plus, available in multiple languages. The show follows the success of previous Mnet projects, including the formation of ALPHA DRIVE ONE, which debuted in January 2026.
Why It's Important?
The launch of 'GIRLS PLANET 2' underscores the growing influence of K-pop beyond Asia, particularly in the Americas. By targeting North and Latin America, Mnet aims to tap into new markets and diversify the cultural backgrounds of K-pop artists. This move could significantly impact the global music industry by introducing more diverse talent and expanding the reach of K-pop. The initiative also reflects a strategic shift in the entertainment industry towards more inclusive and globalized content, potentially setting a precedent for other music genres and entertainment sectors.
What's Next?
As the application process begins, Mnet will likely see a diverse pool of candidates from across the Americas. The program's format and concept will be tailored to appeal to the U.S. market, which could influence the show's production and marketing strategies. The success of 'GIRLS PLANET 2' could lead to further international collaborations and projects within the K-pop industry, fostering a more globalized music scene. Additionally, the program may inspire other entertainment companies to explore similar initiatives, further integrating global cultures into mainstream media.
