Lidl GB has announced the launch of its own-brand rice verified under the Sustainable Rice Platform (SRP) label, marking a first for UK supermarkets. This initiative is part of Lidl's broader strategy to enhance sustainability across its supply chain.
The SRP label ensures that the rice meets 41 requirements focused on environmental and social sustainability, including farm management, water use, and labor rights. Charlotte Curtress, head of quality and sustainability at Lidl GB, emphasized that this move is a significant step in responsible sourcing, aiming to protect the planet and improve farmer incomes. The SRP aims to promote climate-smart rice production, addressing the environmental challenges posed by traditional rice farming, which is known for high water usage and methane emissions.
