What's Happening?
EVelution Energy has entered into a significant agreement with Mitsui, valued at approximately $850 million, to supply cobalt from a new processing facility in Arizona. This facility is set to become the first commercial-scale cobalt metal and cobalt sulphate
plant in the United States. The agreement, which spans five years, is part of a broader effort to enhance U.S. critical mineral processing capabilities. The plant is expected to produce up to 7,000 tons per annum of cobalt, addressing the needs of sectors such as aerospace, electric vehicle batteries, and advanced manufacturing. This initiative is aligned with U.S. industrial priorities and aims to reduce dependence on non-allied refining capacities, particularly as over 75% of refined cobalt is currently produced in China.

The establishment of a domestic cobalt processing facility is crucial for the U.S. as it seeks to strengthen its industrial base and reduce reliance on foreign sources for critical minerals. This move is expected to bolster U.S. supply chains, particularly in high-tech and defense sectors that are heavily reliant on cobalt.
