What's Happening?
Christian Levett, a philanthropist and art collector, has shifted his focus from investment management to art collection, particularly works by women artists of the Modern and contemporary periods. Levett, who founded the Mougins Museum of Classical Art
in France, closed the institution in 2023 to establish the Female Artists of the Mougins Museum. His collection now includes around 1,700 works, with a significant emphasis on abstraction by women, post-war American art, and contemporary African art. Levett is a frequent attendee of Tefaf art fairs and will participate in a panel discussion at Tefaf New York, focusing on collecting with a mission for public access.
Why It's Important?
Levett's transition highlights a growing trend in the art world towards recognizing and valuing works by women artists, which have historically been underrepresented. His focus on public access and education through his collection aligns with broader efforts to democratize art appreciation and make diverse artistic voices more visible. This shift could influence other collectors and institutions to reevaluate their collections and support underrepresented artists, potentially leading to a more inclusive art market.
What's Next?
Levett's participation in Tefaf New York and his focus on public access suggest ongoing efforts to engage with the art community and promote his collection's educational value. As he continues to acquire and showcase works by women artists, Levett may inspire similar initiatives among collectors and museums, contributing to a more equitable art landscape.
