What's Happening?
AerFin, a UK-based aftermarket specialist, is increasing its inventory of Pratt & Whitney geared turbofan (GTF) engine parts by disassembling more Airbus A320neo aircraft. The company has already completed eight teardowns, each yielding between 1,200
and 1,400 serviceable components. The demand for GTF engines is particularly high, with lease rates for two engines sometimes nearing the cost of an entire A320neo airliner. This trend is partly driven by the collapse of Spirit Airlines, as lessors are opting to lease engines separately from the aircraft. AerFin is capitalizing on this demand by offering a growing portfolio of fresh-from-shop PW1000 GTF engines for lease or sale, providing flexible solutions to its customers.
Why It's Important?
The increased demand for GTF engine parts highlights a significant shift in the aviation aftermarket industry. As airlines and lessors focus on maximizing the value of their assets, the ability to lease engines separately from aircraft becomes increasingly attractive. This trend benefits companies like AerFin, which can provide high-quality engine solutions to meet the market's needs. Additionally, the potential sale of AerFin by its owner, Danish private equity firm Cata Cap, could be influenced by the company's strong financial performance and the high demand for its services. AerFin's net assets increased to $163 million by the end of 2025, and its operating profit rose by nearly 25% from the previous year.
What's Next?
AerFin is positioned for a potential sale, as its owner, Cata Cap, acquired the business in 2019 and may now be considering divestiture. The company's strong market position and financial performance make it an attractive candidate for acquisition. As the demand for GTF engine parts continues to grow, AerFin is likely to expand its operations further, potentially increasing its market share in the aviation aftermarket industry. The ongoing trend of parting out young aircraft for their engines could also lead to more strategic partnerships and collaborations within the industry.
