What's Happening?
Grieg Maritime Group has entered into a contract with GT Wings to install two AirWing20 Jet Sails on their vessel, Star Kirkenes. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance energy efficiency and reduce fuel consumption by utilizing wind
power. The AirWing20 is a new generation of Jet Sail technology known for its high thrust output and compact design, making it suitable for space-constrained applications. The installation is scheduled to occur during a drydock period towards the end of 2026 or early 2027. This project represents the second full-scale installation of the AirWing technology and is a significant step in GT Wings' efforts to scale commercial deployment. The contract also includes an option to install Jet Sails on three additional K-class vessels.
Why It's Important?
The installation of Jet Sails on Grieg Maritime Group's fleet is a significant move towards reducing the maritime industry's carbon footprint. By leveraging wind power, the company aims to decrease reliance on traditional fuels, thereby cutting emissions and operational costs. This aligns with global efforts to combat climate change and meet emissions targets. The collaboration between Grieg Maritime Group and GT Wings also highlights the growing trend of integrating innovative technologies in existing fleets to enhance sustainability. This development could set a precedent for other shipping companies to adopt similar technologies, potentially leading to widespread industry changes.
What's Next?
Following the installation of the Jet Sails on Star Kirkenes, Grieg Maritime Group may evaluate the performance and efficiency gains before deciding on further installations on their other vessels. The success of this project could influence other maritime companies to consider similar upgrades. Additionally, the collaboration between Grieg Maritime Group and GT Wings may lead to further innovations in wind-assisted propulsion technologies, potentially expanding their market presence and encouraging more investments in sustainable maritime solutions.
