What's Happening?
EnviroGold Global Limited has announced positive results from its test work program on tailings from Hecla Mining Company's Greens Creek Mine in Alaska. The company, which focuses on recovering precious and critical metals from mine waste, completed Phase
2 of its structured test work, demonstrating high recovery rates of silver and gold from the tailings. The results confirm the technical suitability of the NVRO Process™ for processing the tailings, achieving near-complete oxidation of sulfide minerals. A bulk sample is being shipped to EnviroGold's facility in Australia for further optimization and demonstration-scale processing.
Why It's Important?
The successful recovery of metals from mine tailings represents a significant advancement in sustainable mining practices. By extracting valuable metals from existing waste, EnviroGold's technology offers a lower-impact alternative to traditional mining, aligning with global environmental, social, and governance (ESG) frameworks. This approach not only reduces environmental liabilities associated with legacy mine waste but also contributes to the supply of critical minerals needed for various industries. The project has the potential to enhance resource efficiency and support economic growth by unlocking previously untapped metal resources.
What's Next?
EnviroGold plans to proceed with Phase 3 pilot plant optimization and Phase 4 demonstration-scale processing to validate the process at an industrial scale. These phases aim to optimize operating conditions, assess waste stream characteristics, and generate data for techno-economic modeling. Subject to further studies and approvals, the company may enter into commercial arrangements to recover metals from the Greens Creek tailings. The success of this project could pave the way for similar initiatives at other mining sites, promoting sustainable resource management and reducing the environmental footprint of mining operations.
