What's Happening?
New Zealand marine technology company Vessev is expanding into the Australian market by introducing its electric hydrofoiling passenger vessels through the Enautic Group. The flagship vessel, the VS-9, is a 29-foot electric hydrofoiling catamaran known
for its energy efficiency and smooth ride. With a cruise speed of 25 knots and a range of up to 50 nautical miles, the VS-9 consumes up to 90% less energy than traditional vessels of similar size. Several VS-9 vessels have been reserved for operation on Perth's Swan River, focusing on premium tourism experiences such as wine cruises and private charters. The first vessels are expected to be delivered in early 2027, with plans to introduce commuter routes in the future.
Why It's Important?
The introduction of Vessev's electric hydrofoiling vessels in Australia represents a significant advancement in sustainable marine transportation. By offering a more energy-efficient alternative to traditional vessels, Vessev's expansion could reduce the environmental impact of water-based transport. This move also opens up new opportunities for tourism and commuter services in underutilized waterways like Perth's Swan River. The success of this initiative could encourage further adoption of electric hydrofoiling technology in other regions, promoting a shift towards greener transportation solutions.
What's Next?
Vessev is working with classification societies and local regulatory bodies to ensure compliance with all local requirements for their innovative vessel type. As the first vessels are expected to be delivered in early 2027, the company will likely focus on establishing a strong operational presence in Australia. The introduction of commuter routes could follow, potentially transforming water-based transport in the region. Stakeholders in the tourism and transportation sectors will be closely monitoring the impact of these vessels on local markets.
