What's Happening?
Zurich North America, in collaboration with Arrowsight, has successfully implemented a three-year pilot program using video surveillance and coaching at New York City construction sites. This initiative
led to a more than 50% reduction in workers' compensation claims frequency and improved jobsite safety. The program involved deploying Arrowsight's cameras and coaching system on nine major construction projects, valued at over $2 billion. The technology flagged risky and exemplary safety behaviors, allowing for timely coaching and adjustments. The pilot demonstrated significant increases in worker safety compliance rates, particularly in wearing fall protection, which is crucial for preventing catastrophic losses and deaths. As a result, Zurich plans to require Arrowsight technology for all construction wrap-up projects it insures in New York and is offering the enhancement nationwide.
Why It's Important?
The reduction in workers' compensation claims has significant implications for the construction industry, particularly in New York, where insurance costs and claim frequencies are among the highest in the nation. By enhancing safety compliance, the program not only protects workers but also supports the profitability of construction firms by reducing losses paid within deductibles or retentions. The initiative represents a shift towards integrating technology with human insight to improve safety standards, potentially setting a new benchmark for risk management in construction. The success of the pilot could encourage other industries to adopt similar technologies, leading to broader improvements in workplace safety and insurance claim reductions.
What's Next?
Following the success of the pilot, Zurich plans to expand the use of Arrowsight technology across the country, with Arrowsight as its exclusive provider of camera-enabled technology for construction sites. Zurich Resilience Solutions will continue to offer third-party risk engineering services, enhancing the value provided to construction firms. The ongoing collaboration between Zurich and Arrowsight may lead to further innovations in safety technology and risk management practices. Construction firms participating in the pilot, such as Suffolk and Posillico, have already reported significant reductions in claims and incurred losses, indicating a promising future for the widespread adoption of such technologies.
