What's Happening?
OurCoop, a newly formed cooperative group, has announced a significant expansion in its renewable energy initiatives, now generating enough electricity to power over 65,000 homes. This development follows the merger of Central Co-op, Midcounties Co-operative,
and Chelmsford Star in January. The cooperative has installed solar systems across more than 130 locations, including store rooftops, a solar carport, and a mini solar farm, collectively generating approximately 4.7 million kWh of renewable electricity annually. This effort has resulted in a reduction of over 800 tonnes of CO2 emissions each year. Additionally, OurCoop is investing in larger renewable supply partnerships through long-term power purchase agreements, notably with the London Array offshore wind farm. The cooperative also supports over 380 power purchase agreements with community energy organizations through its Younity joint venture with Octopus Energy.
Why It's Important?
The expansion of OurCoop's renewable energy initiatives is significant as it underscores a growing trend towards sustainable energy solutions within the cooperative sector. By generating substantial amounts of clean energy, OurCoop not only reduces its carbon footprint but also empowers local communities through energy ownership and control. This initiative aligns with broader environmental goals and demonstrates the potential for cooperatives to lead in sustainable practices. The cooperative's efforts contribute to the UK's renewable energy targets and provide a model for other organizations aiming to integrate sustainability into their operations. The involvement of community energy organizations further highlights the importance of local engagement in achieving energy independence and environmental stewardship.
What's Next?
OurCoop plans to continue expanding its renewable energy projects and partnerships. The cooperative is committed to supporting tree planting and environmental education programs across its various operations, including travel, funeralcare, telecoms, and nursery services. Through its Younity joint venture, OurCoop aims to help community organizations scale up their renewable energy projects, secure funding, and navigate regulatory challenges. This ongoing commitment to sustainability suggests that OurCoop will play a significant role in shaping the future of community-driven renewable energy initiatives in the UK.
