What's Happening?
Japanese sales and distribution company Bitters End has secured international rights to 'All the Lovers in the Night,' a film adaptation of Mieko Kawakami's novel. Directed by Yukiko Sode, the film stars Tadanobu Asano and Yukino Kishii. The story follows Fuyuko, a solitary freelance proofreader whose life changes after meeting a high school physics teacher. The film is in post-production, with a Japanese release planned for later this year. Bitters End will present the film at the Berlin European Film Market, alongside other titles like 'Rhapsody, Rhapsody' and 'All of a Sudden.'
Why It's Important?
The acquisition by Bitters End highlights the growing international interest in Japanese cinema and literature. 'All the Lovers in the Night' is based on a novel that
gained international acclaim, being the first Japanese title shortlisted for the U.S. National Book Critics Circle Award. This move could enhance the global reach of Japanese films, potentially increasing their presence in international markets. The film's presentation at the Berlin EFM could attract further international distributors, expanding its audience beyond Japan.
