What's Happening?
Kendra Woodland, a graduate of the University of New Brunswick, made her professional debut in the Professional Women's Hockey League (PWHL) with the Ottawa Charge. Woodland replaced the starting goaltender, Gwyneth Philips, during the first period after
Philips allowed three goals on eight shots. Woodland successfully stopped 14 of the 16 shots she faced in her 45 minutes of play. This marks her first game since her final season at the University of New Brunswick in 2023-24. Woodland's journey to professional hockey included a stint at the University of North Dakota, which she left after the cancellation of their women's hockey program. She then moved to New Brunswick, where she was named the AUS Rookie of the Year and a U Sports All-Rookie. Woodland also won gold with Canada's Universiade team and received the Broderick Trophy as the U Sports Player of the Year.
Why It's Important?
Woodland's debut in the PWHL is significant as it highlights the growing presence of U Sports alumni in professional women's hockey. Her transition from university to professional play underscores the opportunities available for Canadian athletes in the PWHL, a league that continues to expand its talent pool. Woodland's success could inspire other U Sports athletes to pursue professional careers, thereby strengthening the league's competitiveness and visibility. Additionally, her journey reflects the challenges and resilience required to succeed in women's sports, particularly in navigating program cancellations and finding new opportunities.
What's Next?
As Woodland continues her career in the PWHL, her performance will be closely watched by both fans and scouts. Her ability to adapt to the professional level will determine her future in the league. The PWHL may also see an increase in interest from other U Sports athletes, potentially leading to more signings and a stronger league overall. Woodland's progress could also influence Hockey Canada's selection process for national teams, as she has previously been invited to their national team selection summer showcase.
