What's Happening?
Orbit Fab and Thales Alenia Space are collaborating on a project to study the feasibility of refueling satellites with electric propulsion systems in orbit. Supported by the U.K. Space Agency, this initiative aims to integrate Orbit Fab's RAFTI refueling interface
with Thales Alenia's electric propulsion systems. The project is part of a broader effort to enhance satellite servicing and develop reusable spacecraft infrastructure, reflecting growing interest in extending satellite lifetimes and improving maneuverability.
Why It's Important?
This collaboration represents a significant step towards sustainable space operations by enabling in-orbit refueling of satellites. The ability to refuel satellites could extend their operational life, reduce space debris, and lower costs associated with launching new satellites. As the space industry continues to expand, innovations like these are crucial for maintaining sustainable and efficient operations. The project also highlights the increasing importance of international collaboration in advancing space technology.
