What's Happening?
Registration is now open for a heritage tour of Underground Railroad sites in the South Suburban area, scheduled for June 6. The tour, led by representatives from the Midwest Underground Railroad Network, will explore historical sites where escaped slaves
sought freedom before the Civil War. Participants will travel by bus and engage in some walking to visit these sites. The tour will begin at Sandridge Nature Center in South Holland and is free to the public, though reservations are required due to limited seating. The event is sponsored by the Forest Preserves of Cook County.
Why It's Important?
The Underground Railroad tour offers a unique educational opportunity to learn about a significant part of American history. It highlights the courage and resilience of those who sought freedom and the individuals who assisted them. Such tours can foster a deeper understanding of the historical struggles for civil rights and the ongoing impact of these events on contemporary society. By preserving and sharing these stories, the tour contributes to cultural heritage and historical education, promoting awareness and appreciation of the past.
