What's Happening?
The Bookies Bookstore, a long-standing establishment in Denver, Colorado, has undergone a change in ownership. Originally founded by Sue Lubeck in 1971, the bookstore was operated by her until her passing in 2021. Nicole Sullivan, who previously owned
BookBar, took over and relocated the store to a larger space on Holly Street. In 2025, Kirstin Gulling, a former attorney, purchased the bookstore. Gulling aims to transform The Bookies into a community hub, offering space for club meetups and author events. The store continues to thrive with a focus on educational materials and children's books, which account for a significant portion of sales. Gulling's vision is to combat societal isolation by fostering a gathering space for the community.
Why It's Important?
The transition of ownership at The Bookies Bookstore highlights the evolving landscape of independent bookstores in the U.S. As large retail chains and online platforms dominate the market, independent bookstores like The Bookies play a crucial role in maintaining community engagement and promoting literacy. Gulling's approach to making the bookstore a community space addresses the growing concern of social isolation, offering a physical venue for interaction and cultural exchange. This model not only supports local economies but also preserves the cultural fabric of neighborhoods by providing a space for diverse voices and ideas.
