What's Happening?
Taseko Mines Limited has commenced copper cathode production at its Florence Copper operation in Arizona. The project, which utilizes in-situ recovery technology, is expected to produce between 30 million and 35 million pounds of copper in 2026. The Florence Copper project aims to produce LME Grade A copper with minimal environmental impact, avoiding conventional open-pit mining. Construction was completed in late 2025, and the focus has shifted to wellfield operations and commissioning of the solvent extraction and electrowinning plant. The company is optimistic about ramping up production to full capacity, targeting 85 million pounds annually.
Why It's Important?
The start of production at the Florence Copper project marks a significant milestone for Taseko Mines,
potentially boosting the company's output and revenue. The use of in-situ recovery technology represents a more sustainable approach to copper mining, reducing surface disturbance and environmental impact. This development is crucial for the U.S. copper industry, as it aligns with increasing demand for copper driven by the renewable energy and electric vehicle sectors. Successful ramp-up of the Florence project could position Taseko as a key player in the copper market, contributing to domestic supply and reducing reliance on imports.
