What's Happening?
The Hong Kong International Film Festival Society has announced the selection of 12 titles for the work-in-progress section of the Hong Kong-Asia Film Financing Forum (HAF). Among the selected filmmakers are Indonesia's Yosep Anggi Noen, the Philippines' Arvin Belarmino, and Hong Kong's Norris Wong. Noen's film, 'The Sea Speaks His Name,' is a political drama about a student activist's disappearance in the 1990s. Other projects include 'Jani Be Good' by Ariani Darmawan and 'My Mother' by Eddie Cahyono. Arvin Belarmino's 'Ria' and Norris Wong's 'Good Trip' are also part of the lineup. These projects, mostly in post-production, have budgets up to $2.2 million and include seven debut features. They will be presented at HAF from March 17-19 as part of the HKIFF
Industry Project Market.
Why It's Important?
The selection of these films for the HAF Work-In-Progress section highlights the diversity and creativity of filmmakers from Asia. It provides a platform for emerging talents to showcase their work to international audiences and industry professionals, potentially leading to distribution deals and further funding opportunities. The inclusion of political and culturally significant narratives, such as 'The Sea Speaks His Name,' underscores the role of cinema in addressing historical and social issues. This exposure can enhance the filmmakers' profiles, attract international collaborations, and contribute to the global film industry's diversity.
What's Next?
The selected films will be presented at the HAF, where they will have the opportunity to attract potential investors and distributors. Success at the forum could lead to further festival screenings and international releases. The filmmakers may also gain opportunities for future projects and collaborations, both within Asia and globally. The exposure from HAF can help these filmmakers build their reputations and expand their reach in the international film market.
