What's Happening?
The San Giobbe altarpiece by Giovanni Bellini is set to undergo its most comprehensive restoration in over 500 years at the Gallerie dell’Accademia in Venice. The restoration will be conducted in public view, as the painting is too fragile to move. The project,
estimated to cost €500,000, aims to stabilize the wood panel and analyze the pigments using advanced imaging techniques. The altarpiece, depicting Madonna and Child with saints, has suffered from long cracks due to temperature fluctuations and color changes in its original pigments. The restoration will involve cleaning, touching up with reversible pigments, and applying a new varnish.
Why It's Important?
This restoration project is significant as it preserves a critical piece of Venetian art history and demonstrates the integration of scientific knowledge in art conservation. By conducting the restoration in public view, the museum aims to enhance visitor engagement and education about the conservation process. The project is also a testament to the importance of preserving cultural heritage, with funding support from Venetian Heritage, a non-profit organization. The restoration will not only stabilize the artwork but also provide insights into Bellini's techniques and the historical context of Venetian altar painting.
