What's Happening?
WideOpenWest, Inc. (Wow!), a regional broadband provider based in Englewood, Colorado, is transitioning its customers from its proprietary streaming service, Wow! tv+, to YouTube TV. This move follows a 2023 agreement with Google, allowing Wow! to offer
YouTube TV to its customers. The transition is part of a broader industry trend where cable operators are moving away from traditional TV delivery due to declining video subscribers and high content licensing costs. Wow! was acquired by DigitalBridge Group, Inc. and Crestview Partners in December 2025 for approximately $1.5 billion. The company serves 20 markets across the U.S., primarily in the Midwest and Southeast. The transition to YouTube TV is expected to be completed by June 30, 2026.
Why It's Important?
The shift from Wow! tv+ to YouTube TV highlights the ongoing transformation in the cable and streaming TV industry. As traditional cable TV subscriptions decline, streaming services are becoming more prevalent, with 47% of U.S. homes using streaming services as of January 2026. This transition allows Wow! to focus on its broadband services, which are seen as more sustainable in the long term. Customers benefit from a consolidated bill and potential cost savings when bundling YouTube TV with their internet service. This move reflects a strategic pivot in the industry towards high-speed internet services, driven by changing consumer preferences and the financial pressures of maintaining traditional TV services.
What's Next?
Wow! plans to complete the transition of its remaining cable TV subscribers to YouTube TV by mid-2026. This strategic shift may prompt other regional providers to consider similar partnerships or transitions to streaming services. The industry is likely to see further consolidation as companies adapt to the evolving media consumption landscape. Stakeholders, including consumers and investors, will be watching how these changes impact service offerings and pricing in the broadband and streaming sectors.
