Phoenix Tailings, a Massachusetts-based company, is pioneering a new approach to rare earth element (REE) production by utilizing mining waste and avoiding hazardous chemical processes. The company, co-founded by MIT alumni, has developed a technology
platform that uses electrochemistry to recover critical metals from mining tailings without the environmental burden of traditional methods. This innovation comes as China dominates the global REE market, accounting for 60% of mining output and 91% of refining capacity. Phoenix Tailings aims to reduce reliance on Chinese supply chains by establishing a domestic production capability that minimizes environmental impact.
