What's Happening?
The Bentley Foundation has announced a new philanthropic partnership with the National Portrait Gallery, marking its second major collaboration following its work with The Queen’s Reading Room. This partnership is part of Bentley's Beyond100+ strategy,
which aims to foster long-term positive change through cultural and educational initiatives. The collaboration supports the Photo Portrait Now program, a higher education initiative that provides students with professional development opportunities in contemporary portrait photography. The program, now in its third year, involves six universities across England and Wales and offers students access to the Gallery’s collection and expertise. Participants are encouraged to create original works that reflect personal and social narratives, culminating in a public exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery.
Why It's Important?
This partnership highlights the role of corporate philanthropy in expanding access to the arts and education, particularly for underrepresented groups. By supporting the Photo Portrait Now program, the Bentley Foundation is helping to nurture the next generation of creative talent, providing them with the skills and opportunities needed to succeed in the arts industry. This initiative not only benefits the students involved but also enriches the cultural landscape by promoting diverse voices and perspectives. The collaboration underscores the importance of investing in cultural and educational programs as a means of driving social change and fostering community resilience.
What's Next?
The partnership is expected to continue fostering opportunities for students to engage with professional photographers and curators, enhancing their career prospects in the creative industries. The annual public exhibition and symposium at the National Portrait Gallery will serve as a platform for students to showcase their work and engage with industry professionals. This ongoing collaboration may inspire similar initiatives, encouraging other corporations to invest in cultural and educational programs that promote diversity and inclusion.
