What's Happening?
A Tyrannosaurus rex fossil, named 'Gus', is set to be auctioned at Sotheby’s New York on July 14. The fossil, discovered in Harding County, South Dakota, is one of the largest and most complete T. rex skeletons ever found, with an estimated value between
$20 million and $30 million. The fossil was excavated over three summers from 2021 to 2023 by Thomas Heitkamp and his team from Theropoda Expeditions. Gus is approximately 63% complete, featuring a well-preserved skull and other significant bone elements. The auction is expected to attract interest from museums and private collectors worldwide.
Why It's Important?
The auction of Gus highlights the growing market for dinosaur fossils, which has seen record-breaking sales in recent years. This trend underscores a rising interest in paleontological artifacts among museums and private collectors, both in the U.S. and internationally. The high estimated value of Gus reflects its scientific significance and rarity, potentially influencing future fossil discoveries and sales. The auction could also impact the valuation of similar artifacts, setting new benchmarks in the natural history market.
What's Next?
Ahead of the auction, Gus will be displayed at the Breuer building from July 1 to 14, alongside other natural history and science exhibits. The outcome of the auction could prompt further interest and investment in fossil hunting and preservation. It may also lead to increased competition among museums and collectors to acquire such rare specimens, potentially driving up prices in future auctions.
