What's Happening?
Fido’s Landing, a no-kill dog rescue in Homewood, is closing its physical adoption center after just one year due to structural issues with the building. The facility, located at 2207 W. 183rd Street, faced persistent problems such as roof leaks, flooding,
and mold growth, which created unsafe conditions for animals and volunteers. Despite efforts to address these issues, the landlord failed to make necessary repairs, leading the organization to revert to a home-based rescue model. This transition will involve caring for dogs in foster homes rather than a central location, allowing the rescue to continue its mission in a safer and more sustainable manner.
Why It's Important?
The closure of Fido’s Landing's physical shelter highlights the challenges faced by animal rescue organizations in maintaining suitable facilities. The decision to transition to a home-based model underscores the importance of adaptability and resourcefulness in the nonprofit sector. By continuing its operations through foster homes, Fido’s Landing can still provide care for homeless dogs, albeit on a smaller scale. This situation also raises awareness about the need for reliable infrastructure and support for animal welfare organizations, which play a critical role in addressing pet overpopulation and promoting responsible pet ownership.
What's Next?
Fido’s Landing plans to hold a Pivot Party on June 28 to place remaining animals and sell off shelter items to pay off repair debts. The organization will continue to seek community support through volunteer foster families, donations, and financial contributions to rebuild its operations. The transition to a home-based model will require careful coordination to ensure the continued care and placement of dogs. The rescue's commitment to its mission remains strong, and it will focus on finding innovative ways to support its work in the absence of a physical shelter.
