What's Happening?
Space Beyond, a startup founded by Ryan Mitchell, plans to send the ashes of 1,000 people to space affordably by 2027. The 'Ashes to Space' program will use CubeSats to transport the ashes, with a launch
scheduled on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rideshare mission. The service is priced at $249, significantly lower than existing options. The CubeSat will orbit the Earth for about five years before re-entering the atmosphere. This initiative aims to provide a unique memorial option, leveraging the reduced costs of space access through rideshare models.
Why It's Important?
Space Beyond's initiative represents a democratization of space access, making space memorials more affordable and accessible. This reflects broader trends in the space industry, where reduced launch costs are enabling new commercial opportunities. The program also highlights a shift in how people memorialize loved ones, offering a novel and symbolic option. By utilizing CubeSats and rideshare missions, Space Beyond is capitalizing on technological advancements to create a sustainable business model that challenges traditional funeral industry practices.
