Adelman was a seventh-round draft pick in 1968 and played for several teams during his seven-year NBA career. He transitioned to coaching in 1977, starting at Chemeketa Community College, and later joined the Portland Trail Blazers as an assistant coach. Adelman became the head coach of the Blazers in 1989, leading them to two NBA Finals appearances. He also coached the Golden State Warriors, Sacramento Kings, Houston Rockets, and Minnesota Timberwolves, achieving over 1,000 career wins.
