What's Happening?
Swan Defence and Heavy Industries Limited (SDHI) has received an order from Energy ONE Limited to construct four ammonia dual-fuel bulk carriers, marking a significant milestone in Indian shipbuilding. These vessels, each with a deadweight of 92,500 tonnes,
will be among the largest commercial ships built in India. Designed by South Korea's KMS-EMEC and classed by DNV, the ships will feature ammonia-fueled propulsion systems. This order highlights India's growing capability to produce next-generation, lower-emission vessels as the maritime industry shifts towards cleaner fuels. The first vessel is expected to be delivered in October 2029, with subsequent deliveries at four-month intervals.
Why It's Important?
This development is crucial for the Indian shipbuilding industry, showcasing its ability to meet global demands for sustainable maritime solutions. The use of ammonia as a marine fuel represents a significant step towards reducing emissions in shipping, aligning with international efforts to combat climate change. The project also reflects increased confidence in India's shipbuilding capabilities, potentially attracting more international orders and investments. As the industry moves towards zero-emission vessels, this initiative positions India as a key player in the global transition to cleaner maritime technologies.
