What's Happening?
NEPTUN WERFT has officially delivered two new river cruise ships, Viking Annar and Viking Fjolvar, to the cruise company Viking. The handover took place in Basel on June 11, 2026, following a technical
handover in Lelystad, Netherlands, on June 10. The Viking Annar, part of the Longship series, measures 135 meters and can accommodate 190 passengers and 53 crew members. It will operate on the Rhine, Main, and Danube rivers, with its first guests boarding in Amsterdam on June 22. The Viking Fjolvar, the last of the Seine series, is 125 meters long, designed to navigate the Seine into Paris, and can host 168 passengers and 46 crew members. It will welcome its first guests on July 4.
Why It's Important?
The delivery of these ships marks a significant expansion in Viking's fleet, enhancing its capacity to offer river cruises across major European waterways. This development is crucial for the tourism industry, particularly in Europe, as it signifies a growing demand for river cruises, which are popular for their scenic routes and cultural experiences. The introduction of these ships is likely to boost local economies along their routes by increasing tourist traffic and spending. Additionally, the expansion reflects Viking's commitment to modernizing its fleet with vessels that can navigate diverse river conditions, potentially setting a standard for future river cruise designs.
What's Next?
The Viking Annar and Viking Fjolvar are set to begin their operations soon, with the Annar starting its journey on June 22 and the Fjolvar on July 4. As these ships commence their voyages, Viking will likely monitor their performance and guest feedback to ensure a high-quality experience. The success of these ships could influence Viking's future fleet expansion and route planning. Additionally, other cruise companies may follow suit, investing in similar vessels to capitalize on the growing river cruise market.
