What's Happening?
Kmart Group is broadening its use of radiofrequency identification (RFID) tags beyond apparel to include other product categories and is introducing this technology to Target Australia for the first time.
This expansion was announced during Wesfarmers' strategy day, where Kmart Group's managing director, Aleksandra Spaseka, highlighted RFID's role in supporting the retailer's low-cost operating model and enhancing supply chain visibility. Initially implemented in 2021 for apparel, RFID has improved on-shelf availability and inventory accuracy. The technology uses robots to locate and count items in stores, and more than 60% of apparel items are now tagged at the source. The retailer is also modernizing its supply chain with IT system upgrades and a new automated fulfillment center in New South Wales, expected to be operational by FY28.
Why It's Important?
The expansion of RFID technology by Kmart Group signifies a significant shift towards more efficient inventory management and supply chain operations. By enhancing inventory accuracy and visibility, Kmart can reduce costs and improve customer satisfaction through better product availability. This move also positions Kmart and Target Australia to better compete in the retail market by leveraging technology to streamline operations. The investment in supply chain modernization, including AI integration, is expected to enhance forecasting and inventory management, potentially leading to faster and more consistent service. This development could set a precedent for other retailers to adopt similar technologies, driving industry-wide improvements in efficiency and customer service.
What's Next?
Kmart Group's ongoing supply chain modernization efforts, including the construction of an automated fulfillment center, are expected to continue over the next few years. The center is anticipated to become operational in FY28, with benefits to be realized shortly thereafter. As RFID technology is rolled out to additional product categories and Target Australia, the company will likely monitor the impact on inventory management and customer satisfaction. The broader integration of AI into operations could further optimize supply chain processes, potentially influencing other retailers to adopt similar strategies. Stakeholders will be watching closely to see how these technological advancements affect Kmart's market position and operational efficiency.
