KoBold Metals, a U.S.-backed mining firm, has initiated what is described as the world's largest lithium exploration campaign in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The campaign covers over 3,000 square kilometers, with plans to expand to 5,000 square kilometers by
the end of the year. This initiative utilizes advanced technologies such as AI-driven systems, hyperspectral aerial imaging, and a rapid on-site laboratory to expedite mineral discovery. The focus is on the Manono region, newly recognized as a significant lithium hub. The project is supported by a $50 million investment, which will fund large-scale airborne surveys and the collection of thousands of samples and drill targets by early 2027.
