What's Happening?
The Seattle Mariners have acquired catcher Jhonny Pereda from the Minnesota Twins in exchange for cash considerations. This move was announced by the Mariners on Tuesday, with Pereda being added to their 40-man roster. The acquisition comes after Pereda was designated for assignment by the Twins following their acquisition of catcher Victor Caratini. Pereda, 29, has played for multiple teams, including the Cubs, Red Sox, Giants, Reds, Marlins, Athletics, and Twins. Since his Major League debut with the Marlins in 2024, he has appeared in 50 MLB games, achieving a .595 OPS with six doubles and eight RBIs. In Triple-A, he has a career batting average of .296 with an .811 OPS over 253 games.
Why It's Important?
The acquisition of Jhonny Pereda is significant for the
Mariners as it bolsters their catching options, providing depth behind the plate. With Andrew Knizner set to be the primary backup to Cal Raleigh, Pereda's addition offers the team more flexibility and insurance in the catching position. This move reflects the Mariners' strategy to strengthen their roster by adding experienced players who can contribute both offensively and defensively. For Pereda, joining the Mariners represents an opportunity to establish himself in a new organization and potentially secure a more permanent role in the Major Leagues.
