Resolution Copper, a joint venture between Rio Tinto and BHP, has completed a significant land exchange with the United States Forest Service (USFS). This exchange is considered historic as it facilitates the next phase of developing one of the world's
largest untapped copper deposits. The completion follows a favorable ruling from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, which denied attempts to halt the exchange. As part of the agreement, Resolution Copper has transferred over 5,400 acres of environmentally and culturally sensitive land to the USFS, which includes areas with special status species and Native American cultural sites. In return, the company received more than 2,400 acres of land near the historic Magma copper mine in Superior, Arizona. This exchange was made possible by legislation passed in 2014 with bipartisan support and involved extensive consultation with local communities and Native American Tribes.
