What's Happening?
The Arctial aluminum smelter in Finland, backed by Rio Tinto, is planning to commence production in the second half of 2029. The project aims to produce 610,000 metric tons of aluminum annually, potentially increasing European production by 20%. This
development comes as the ongoing conflict in the Middle East has disrupted aluminum supplies, leading to increased premiums in Europe. The project is currently awaiting a final investment decision in 2027. The smelter would be the first primary aluminum development in continental Europe in over 30 years, although it will not fully meet European import needs.
