What's Happening?
VIKING Life-Saving Equipment has developed the VIKING Helix Marine Evacuation System (MES), aimed at improving evacuation efficiency on passenger ships. The system features a helix-type slide that allows 4-8 people to evacuate simultaneously, supporting
the evacuation of up to 477 individuals into 153-person life rafts within 30 minutes. The system includes a unique bowsing system that maintains life raft positions with minimal crew involvement. Certified by DNV, the VIKING Helix is designed for various vessel configurations, particularly larger ferries and small to mid-size cruise ships. The system's installation requires no welding, facilitating easy integration into new and existing ships.
Why It's Important?
The VIKING Helix MES represents a significant advancement in maritime safety, offering a more efficient and safer evacuation process for passenger ships. By reducing the need for crew involvement and enabling faster evacuations, the system enhances passenger safety and operational efficiency. This innovation is crucial for the cruise and ferry industries, where safety is a top priority. The system's versatility and ease of integration make it an attractive option for ship operators looking to upgrade their safety measures. As the maritime industry continues to prioritize safety, the VIKING Helix could become a standard feature on passenger vessels.
What's Next?
With successful trials completed, the VIKING Helix MES is poised for wider adoption across the maritime industry. Ship operators may begin integrating the system into their fleets, enhancing safety protocols and potentially influencing industry standards. As the system gains popularity, it could drive further innovation in marine evacuation technology, prompting competitors to develop similar solutions. Regulatory bodies may also consider revising safety regulations to incorporate such advanced systems, further promoting their adoption. The VIKING Helix's success could lead to increased demand for VIKING's products and services, solidifying its position as a leader in maritime safety solutions.
