What's Happening?
INTERCARGO, an international association representing dry cargo shipowners, convened industry leaders in Athens to address the growing practice of ship-to-ship (STS) transfers in the dry bulk sector. The meeting included shipowners, charterers, insurers,
and service providers, focusing on developing a consistent approach to STS operations. Unlike the tanker industry, which has established STS practices, the dry bulk sector lacks standardized procedures, leading to varied practices based on cargo type and local conditions. INTERCARGO aims to create a unified framework to enhance safety and efficiency in these operations.
Why It's Important?
The move to standardize STS transfers in the dry bulk industry is crucial for improving operational safety and efficiency. As the practice becomes more common due to larger vessels and limited port infrastructure, a consistent approach is necessary to mitigate risks and ensure smooth operations. This initiative could lead to enhanced safety standards, reduced operational costs, and improved environmental compliance. By bringing together diverse stakeholders, INTERCARGO is fostering collaboration that could lead to industry-wide improvements and set a precedent for other sectors facing similar challenges.
