What's Happening?
Covalo, a Zurich-based platform that connects personal care ingredient suppliers with brands, has raised a €3.5 million funding extension led by Hi inov, with participation from existing investors HTGF and seed + speed Ventures. Founded in 2021 by Yann
Chilvers and Timo von Bargen, Covalo has grown to connect over 1,500 suppliers and 6,000 brands across more than 145 countries. The platform, initially launched as a marketplace for ingredient discovery, is now evolving into a comprehensive data infrastructure for the personal care industry. This transformation aims to integrate directly into suppliers' product information management systems and brands' research and development workflows, replacing traditional methods of data exchange like emails and spreadsheets with a structured, industry-wide data foundation.
Why It's Important?
The funding and strategic shift are significant as they address the increasing regulatory and market pressures within the personal care industry. With the EU Green Deal, microplastics regulations, and sustainability requirements, there is a growing need for efficient reformulation processes. Covalo estimates that by 2030, around 80% of products will require reformulation, necessitating a robust data management system. The platform's evolution into a shared data infrastructure is crucial for enabling the adoption of AI in product development workflows, which is currently hindered by fragmented data management practices. This development could streamline product launches, reduce time-to-market, and improve the success rate of new products.
What's Next?
Covalo plans to use the new funding to scale its data platform, deepen integrations, and enhance AI capabilities. The company aims to create a structured data layer that can be universally accessed, facilitating more efficient and accurate product development processes. As the platform's largest customers continue to expand their usage, Covalo's role in the industry could become increasingly central, potentially setting new standards for data management in personal care. The success of this initiative could influence other sectors facing similar data management challenges.
