What's Happening?
Beth Murphy, a principal consultant at sustainability advisory ERM, alongside Jess Smiles, completed a record-breaking Atlantic crossing as part of the World's Toughest Row. The duo rowed from the Canary Islands to the Caribbean in 38 days, 12 hours, and 18 minutes, surpassing the previous women's pairs world record by nearly a week. Despite lacking ocean rowing experience, Murphy and Smiles achieved this feat without professional support, relying on their technical rowing skills and strategic route choices. Their journey was in support of The Wave Project, a surf-therapy charity.
Why It's Important?
Murphy and Smiles' achievement highlights the potential for individuals to accomplish extraordinary feats through determination and strategic planning. Their success
in the World's Toughest Row not only sets a new benchmark in women's rowing but also brings attention to the causes they support, such as mental health and therapy through sports. This accomplishment may inspire others to pursue challenging endeavors and support charitable causes, demonstrating the impact of combining personal goals with philanthropy.
