What's Happening?
Duke Energy has introduced the Green Source Advantage Express program in North Carolina, aimed at providing large business customers with easier access to renewable energy. This initiative allows companies to subscribe to renewable energy capacity and
match up to 100% of their electricity use with new renewable sources. Early participants include Cisco, United States Cold Storage, and Daimler Truck North America. The program has already surpassed its initial enrollment targets, with 177.3 megawatts subscribed. Duke Energy has also partnered with Cleartrace to offer an Environmental Attribute Tracking tool for emissions tracking.
Why It's Important?
This program represents a significant step towards increasing renewable energy adoption among large businesses, supporting corporate sustainability goals and reducing carbon footprints. By facilitating access to renewable energy, Duke Energy is helping companies meet their environmental commitments and enhance their sustainability profiles. This initiative could also drive broader industry trends towards renewable energy, influencing other utilities and businesses to adopt similar programs.
What's Next?
As the program continues to grow, more businesses may join, further increasing the demand for renewable energy infrastructure. Duke Energy's approach could serve as a model for other utilities, potentially leading to similar programs nationwide. The success of this initiative may also encourage legislative and regulatory support for renewable energy projects, contributing to broader environmental and economic benefits.
