What's Happening?
Advanced Polymer Coatings (APC), based in Ohio, has successfully completed the first application of its MarineLINE coating system on a Jones Act vessel in a U.S. yard. This project marks the first conversion of an ATB petroleum barge to a chemical barge in the United
States, featuring a redesigned stainless steel cargo system. The conversion took place at Gulf Marine Repair shipyard in Tampa, Florida, involving over 5,000 gallons of MarineLINE and 320 tonnes of steel. The project was managed by Amtech, representing Marathon Asset Management, and highlights a shift towards accommodating increasing chemical cargo volumes.
Why It's Important?
The completion of this conversion project is significant as it addresses the growing demand for chemical cargo transportation in the U.S. The use of MarineLINE coating allows for greater flexibility and efficiency in handling corrosive chemicals, which is crucial given the changing market dynamics. This development positions Gulf Marine as a leader in converting ATBs to chemical carriers, potentially influencing the U.S. maritime industry by setting a precedent for future conversions. The project also highlights the importance of innovation in meeting industry demands and enhancing operational capabilities.
What's Next?
With the successful application of MarineLINE, Gulf Marine is poised to undertake more conversions, potentially expanding its market share in the chemical transportation sector. The expertise gained from this project could lead to further collaborations and investments in similar conversions, addressing the shortage of specialized vessels. As demand for chemical cargoes continues to rise, the industry may see increased adoption of advanced coating systems like MarineLINE to improve cargo readiness and competitiveness.
