What's Happening?
Matson has commenced construction on three new LNG-powered 'Aloha Class' container ships at Hanwha Philly Shipyard, Inc. in Pennsylvania. These vessels, compliant with the Jones Act, represent a $1 billion
investment and will match the size and speed of Matson's existing Aloha Class ships, Daniel K. Inouye and Kaimana Hila. The new ships are expected to be delivered between 2027 and 2028, with a carrying capacity of 3,600 TEU and designed to operate at speeds exceeding 23 knots. They will replace older vessels in Matson's Hawaii and China-Long Beach Express services.
Why It's Important?
The construction of these new vessels is a significant development for Matson, enhancing its fleet capabilities and operational efficiency. The investment in LNG-powered ships reflects a broader industry trend towards more environmentally friendly and fuel-efficient maritime operations. This move could position Matson as a leader in sustainable shipping practices, potentially reducing operational costs and environmental impact. For the U.S. shipbuilding industry, this project underscores the importance of domestic shipyards in supporting the Jones Act trade lanes, contributing to economic growth and job creation.
