What's Happening?
Mubi, in collaboration with the Chanel Culture Fund, is launching a new initiative to stream a collection of Asian avant-garde films globally. This project, titled 'Between Tides: Asian Avant-Garde,' is a ten-film collection curated in partnership with Hong Kong's M+ art museum. The collection will be available on Mubi starting January 16 and features works from renowned filmmakers such as Palme d’Or winner Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Kidlat Tahimik, and Liu Jiayin. This marks the first time M+'s moving-image initiatives will be accessible to a worldwide audience, expanding both Chanel's cultural influence in Asia and Mubi's curatorial reach. The collection is part of a broader effort by M+ to preserve and promote Asian cinematic heritage, supported
by Chanel's ongoing cultural patronage.
Why It's Important?
This initiative is significant as it highlights the growing global interest in Asian cinema and the importance of preserving cultural heritage. By making these films available to a global audience, Mubi and Chanel are not only promoting Asian filmmakers but also fostering a greater appreciation for diverse cinematic expressions. This move could potentially open new markets for Asian films and filmmakers, providing them with a platform to reach international audiences. Additionally, it underscores the role of cultural institutions and corporate partnerships in supporting the arts, particularly in regions where such support may be limited.
What's Next?
The launch of 'Between Tides: Asian Avant-Garde' could lead to increased interest in Asian cinema, prompting other streaming platforms to explore similar initiatives. It may also encourage more collaborations between cultural institutions and corporate entities to support and promote regional arts. As the collection becomes available, it will be interesting to see how audiences respond and whether this leads to further projects aimed at preserving and showcasing Asian cinematic heritage.
