Dr. Rohini Somnath Patil, a clinical nutritionist, has evaluated various sweeteners to determine which is the healthiest option. The sweeteners assessed include table sugar, jaggery, honey, stevia, and monk fruit. According to Dr. Patil, table sugar, commonly
used in beverages and desserts, has a high glycemic index of 65, which can spike blood sugar levels quickly. Jaggery, often considered a healthier alternative, is ranked lowest due to its even higher glycemic index of 70-90. Honey, while less processed and containing antioxidants, still impacts blood sugar with a glycemic index of 50-58. Stevia, derived from the Stevia rebaudiana plant, has a glycemic index of zero and does not raise blood glucose levels, though it may have a bitter aftertaste. Monk fruit sweetener, also with a glycemic index of zero, is highlighted as the healthiest option due to its lack of calories and absence of a bitter aftertaste.
