What's Happening?
Mars, Inc. has partnered with ofi to advance regenerative agriculture practices in cocoa production in Ecuador. The five-year agreement aims to implement climate-smart practices across 22,239 acres of farmland, involving over 960 farmers. The initiative
focuses on using low carbon fertilizers, improved crop residue management, and biochar applications to enhance soil health and reduce emissions. The collaboration builds on Mars and ofi's long-standing commitment to sustainable cocoa sourcing, aiming to strengthen crop yields and support farmers' livelihoods.
Why It's Important?
The partnership between Mars and ofi represents a significant step towards sustainable agriculture, addressing environmental and social challenges in cocoa production. By promoting regenerative practices, the initiative aims to improve soil health, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and enhance crop resilience. This collaboration supports global efforts to transition to sustainable food systems, benefiting both farmers and the environment. The success of this project could influence other agricultural sectors to adopt similar practices, driving industry-wide change and supporting climate goals.
