What's Happening?
Japan's Nissui Corporation has acquired the Chilean salmon farming business Pesquera Yadran for $133 million. The acquisition was made through Nissui's subsidiary, Salmones Antartica, based in Chonchi,
Chile. Pesquera Yadran, which operates in the farming and processing of Atlantic salmon, supplies markets in North and Latin America, and Asia. The company reported a loss of $45.5 million in 2024, a significant downturn from a profit of $430,000 the previous year. Nissui aims to establish a stable business portfolio by 2030, balancing its food and marine products businesses, with a focus on aquaculture and fine chemicals as growth drivers.
Why It's Important?
This acquisition is significant for Nissui as it aligns with the company's long-term vision to balance its food and marine products businesses. By acquiring Pesquera Yadran, Nissui is expanding its presence in the global salmon market, which is crucial for its growth strategy. The move also highlights the increasing importance of aquaculture in meeting global seafood demand, as wild fish stocks face sustainability challenges. For the U.S. market, this acquisition could mean increased competition and potentially more diverse seafood offerings, impacting pricing and availability.
What's Next?
The deal is expected to close in January, and Nissui will inherit Pesquera Yadran's subsidiary, Cultivos Yadran. The company plans to leverage this acquisition to enhance its aquaculture capabilities and improve profitability across its marine products division. As Nissui integrates Pesquera Yadran, it will likely focus on optimizing operations to return the business to profitability. The acquisition may also prompt other companies in the seafood industry to consider similar strategic moves to strengthen their market positions.
