in TV commercials. The concept was created by Tim Derk, who also invented the t-shirt cannon. The Coyote's design and name were chosen to reflect the local culture, as coyotes are native to Texas and the American Southwest. The mascot has been recognized for its impact, being inducted into the Mascot Hall of Fame in 2007 and winning the NBA's Mascot of the Year award in 2014.
