What's Happening?
Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding has announced the PA Preferred Marketing Grants program, offering $500,000 to support Pennsylvania farmers and agricultural producers in marketing their products. The grants, available through the PA Department of Agriculture,
provide up to $10,000 to reimburse promotional costs for products under the PA Preferred, PA Preferred Homegrown by Heroes, or PA Preferred Organic programs. Governor Josh Shapiro signed legislation in November 2023 to authorize these grants, marking the first round since the program's inception in 2011. The initiative aims to strengthen local markets and promote Pennsylvania's agricultural products, which contribute significantly to the state's economy.
Why It's Important?
The PA Preferred Marketing Grants are crucial for Pennsylvania's agricultural sector, which supports over 48,800 farms and contributes $132.5 billion annually to the state's economy. By providing financial assistance for marketing, the grants help farmers and producers promote their products, enhancing their visibility and competitiveness in the market. This initiative aligns with Governor Shapiro's commitment to supporting rural communities and ensuring the economic success of Pennsylvania's agriculture. The grants also bolster the state's leadership in organic agricultural product sales, furthering its reputation for high-quality, locally produced goods.
What's Next?
Applications for the PA Preferred Marketing Grants are open until May 16, 2026, allowing producers to apply for reimbursement of promotional costs. The program is part of a broader effort by Governor Shapiro to invest in Pennsylvania's agricultural growth and resilience, including increased funding for the Agricultural Innovation Grant Program and the Fresh Food Financing Initiative. These initiatives aim to expand access to local food, support small businesses, and promote sustainable agricultural practices. The continued investment in Pennsylvania agriculture is expected to drive long-term growth and innovation in the sector.
