What's Happening?
Madeleine Chin, a 13-year-old from Great Neck, New York, has donated 9,000 books to local libraries, schools, and community centers to establish permanent Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) bookshelves. Her non-profit, Mindful Reading, aims to provide
children and young adults with access to literature that reflects their identities and cultures. Chin has also self-published two books featuring Asian American protagonists and delivers motivational speeches to inspire others.
Why It's Important?
Chin's initiative is significant in promoting diversity and representation in literature. By creating AAPI sections in libraries, she is helping to ensure that young readers have access to stories that reflect their own experiences and cultures. This effort supports the broader movement for inclusivity in education and literature, encouraging a more comprehensive understanding of diverse communities. Chin's work also highlights the impact that young individuals can have in driving social change and fostering cultural awareness.
