What's Happening?
Freely, a free streaming service supported by major U.K. broadcasters such as BBC, ITV, Channel 4, and Paramount's Channel 5, is set to launch Freely Spotlight Channels. This initiative aims to enhance monetization opportunities for connected TV operating
system (CTV OS) partners through the Freely TV Guide. The announcement was made by Everyone TV, formerly known as Digital U.K., which is the joint venture behind Freely. The new channels will be available on channel 31 and channels 90-99 on Freely-enabled devices, offering a total of 11 potential channels. V, previously known as VIDAA, is Freely's launch partner and will provide a curated selection of channels from their lineup to the Freely TV Guide. This move is expected to drive discovery, viewing, and advertising revenues from free-to-air streaming channels, while offering viewers more choices.
Why It's Important?
The introduction of Freely Spotlight Channels represents a significant development in the streaming industry, particularly for connected TV partners. By providing additional channels, Freely is creating new revenue streams through advertising and channel promotion. This initiative aligns with Freely's core value of ensuring that content familiar to British audiences remains easily accessible. For CTV OS partners, this presents an opportunity to monetize viewing in a more integrated manner. The move also highlights the growing importance of free streaming services in the media landscape, as they offer an alternative to traditional subscription-based models. This could potentially influence the strategies of other streaming services and broadcasters, as they seek to adapt to changing consumer preferences and technological advancements.
What's Next?
Freely plans to continue expanding its platform, with V expected to unveil and launch its channels within the Freely TV Guide later this year. The service is also introducing a Showcase Channel on channel 100, which will feature short how-to, feature, and informational videos. As Freely scales, it aims to deliver long-term value across the ecosystem, ensuring that free, trusted TV remains easy to discover. The service has already surpassed 1 million weekly users during the Christmas week, with growth continuing into the first quarter. Freely is independently forecasted to become the largest TV device platform in the U.K. by 2030, indicating a strong potential for further expansion and influence in the streaming market.
