What's Happening?
A set of four bronze frog fountains by artist François-Xavier Lalanne is set to be auctioned at Christie's Design auction at Rockefeller Center on June 10. These sculptures, known as Grenouille fountains, were the first of their kind created by Lalanne and
have been a part of Alexandra Marshall's Houston, Texas, swimming pool for decades. The fountains are expected to fetch between $2.5 million and $3.5 million. The auction highlights the continued interest in Lalanne's work, following the record-breaking sale of his copper Hippopotamus Bar for $31.4 million at Sotheby's last December. The auction will also feature other notable pieces, including works by Donald Judd and Dan Flavin, as well as a rare Henning Koppels eel covered dish.
Why It's Important?
The auction of Lalanne's frog fountains underscores the enduring appeal and high market value of his whimsical yet functional art pieces. This event is significant for collectors and investors in the art market, as it reflects the growing demand for unique and historically significant artworks. The high valuation of the fountains also highlights the importance of provenance and the artist's reputation in determining the value of art pieces. What's Next?
As the auction date approaches, interest from collectors and art enthusiasts is expected to intensify, potentially driving up the final sale price of the fountains. The outcome of the auction could influence future valuations of Lalanne's works and similar art pieces. Additionally, the success of this auction may encourage other collectors to bring rare and valuable items to market, further stimulating activity in the art auction sector. Christie's will likely continue to leverage its reputation and expertise to attract high-value consignments and maintain its leadership in the global art market.
