What's Happening?
Evotrex, a Los Angeles-based startup, has raised $30 million in a Series A funding round to develop its hybrid RV travel trailers, designed for extended off-grid living. The company, backed by Anker, aims to produce around 1,000 units annually. The RVs
are powered by a battery pack recharged with an onboard gas engine, allowing users to live off the grid without needing charging stations. This approach, known as an extended range electric vehicle (EREV), is gaining popularity, with 90% of Evotrex's order book filled for the fully loaded Premium trim of its PG5 RV, priced at approximately $160,000. The company plans to manufacture its RVs in China and complete final assembly in California.
Why It's Important?
The development of hybrid RVs by Evotrex represents a significant shift in the recreational vehicle market, which has been slow to adopt electric technology. As traditional manufacturers lag, startups like Evotrex are filling the gap, appealing to consumers interested in sustainable and independent travel options. This innovation could disrupt the RV industry by setting new standards for off-grid capabilities and environmental impact. The success of Evotrex's hybrid RVs could encourage other manufacturers to accelerate their electric vehicle offerings, potentially leading to broader adoption of eco-friendly travel solutions.
What's Next?
Evotrex plans to continue testing the durability of its PG5 RV over the next 10 to 12 months, addressing the mechanical integrity challenges common in the RV industry. The company is also finalizing locations for manufacturing and assembly, with a focus on leveraging the diverse climates around Los Angeles for testing. As Evotrex prepares to enter the market, it will need to establish a strong distribution and service network to support its customers, which could influence its long-term success and market position.
