What's Happening?
Escarda Technologies, a Berlin-based startup, is set to scale production of its AI-powered laser weeding system following its acquisition by Berlin.Industrial.Group (B.I.G.). The system uses high-resolution cameras and AI-driven plant recognition to identify
and eliminate weeds without herbicides. This technology is designed for practical field use, targeting labor-intensive crops where precise weed control is crucial. The acquisition provides Escarda with access to B.I.G.'s expertise in photonics and manufacturing, enhancing production capacity and safety systems. The laser weeding platform, which includes Class-1 laser architecture, is modular and can support up to eight laser units for large-scale operations.
Why It's Important?
The development of AI-driven laser weeding systems represents a significant advancement in agricultural technology, offering a sustainable alternative to chemical herbicides. This innovation could reduce the environmental impact of farming by minimizing soil disturbance and chemical use. As demand for non-chemical weed control solutions grows, Escarda's technology could play a crucial role in transforming agricultural practices. The acquisition by B.I.G. is likely to accelerate the commercial rollout of these systems, potentially leading to widespread adoption in the agricultural sector and contributing to more sustainable farming practices.
What's Next?
In 2026, Escarda plans to focus on increasing production and establishing an international dealer and service network. The company aims to provide growers with a field-ready alternative to conventional crop-protection systems, supported by regional service partners and spare parts infrastructure. This expansion could facilitate the adoption of laser weeding technology on a global scale, promoting sustainable agriculture and reducing reliance on chemical herbicides.
